The Urban Forest Initiative is glad to partner with Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment, UK Department of Entomology, UK Department of Forestry, and the UK Student Sustainability Council to bring several prominent urban forestry researchers from around the country to share their work with the University of Kentucky and Lexington community beginning in the fall of 2015 and spring 2016. Dr. David Nowak is a researcher and educator whose program goals include investigating what makes up the vegetation in cities and town and what environmental or ecosystem services this vegetation provides to local and regional populations. He has worked on the development of several applications to aid in management and planning decisions to sustain urban forest health and services.

Dr. Margaret Carreiro's research is focused on understanding how urban environments (the built environment, people) interact with the natural and semi-natural components of cities and suburbs. Her studies have included studying the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition, invasive species, habitat fragmentation, restoration management and socio-cultural legacies in affecting plant and soil communities and ecosystem processes.
