Narrative

We chose this tree because it appealed to us aesthetically due to its unique shape rather than the classical round canopy tree shape we think of. Also, it was one of the biggest trees in the area, dwarfing all of the younger trees in its vicinity. If this tree is at least 50 years old, then it would have seen the construction and development of UK’s campus over the last half century. The tree would have seen the parking lots of common wealth stadium built, the campus getting busier and busier as the student body grew. It would have seen UK students celebrating 5 of the 8 National Championships. We learned that single trees can have a startling impact on the world around them, in ways we hardly consider on a daily basis. By just doing what it needs to survive the tree is able to improve our lives by producing oxygen, taking in carbon-dioxide, providing shade, and reducing storm water damage and runoff.
